Deloitte's Technology Fast50 : Fastest Growing Belgian Company 2014

Fastest of the Fast: iText wins first place in Deloitte's Fast50 Belgium

iText came back with two awards from this year's edition of Deloitte's Fast 50. With an extreme growth of 4099% over five years, iText surpassed all contenders in the category "IT & Digital Solutions" as well as in the entire Deloitte competition. After being in the Top 10 last year in the Benelux region, this year iText was the undisputable #1 winner in the Belgian-only ranking.

Here is the official Deloitte press release from the competition. We are looking forward to find out iText's ranking in Deloitte's Fast 500 competition for the EMEA region that will be held later this year.

The Belgian award ceremony was a celebration of entrepreneurship, networking, music and good food. We met a lot of old and new friends, and got lots of media coverage, including Kanaal Z (in Dutch).

iText Group is a private company owned by the original founders, Ingeborg Willaert and Bruno Lowagie. The Deloitte award comes on the footsteps of the Belcham award just two weeks ago, where iText was another #1 winner in the Most Promising Company of the Year category!

Deloitte Fast 50 edition 2014: We're nominated!

Deloitte Belgium today announced the names of the fifty technology companies that have been nominated for the first fully Belgian edition of the Deloitte Technology Fast50 competition. The Technology Fast50 award will be given to the country's fastest-growing technology company, based on its percentage of growth in turnover during the last five years, at the award ceremony which will be held on 22 October, 2014 in Brussels.

Public or private companies headquartered in Belgium who develop a technology-related product or service and who have experienced substantial revenue growth over the last five years, were invited to register for the competition between 15 May and 31 August for their chance to be nominated as one of the country’s 50 fastest-growing technology companies.

"The Deloitte Technology Fast50 competition enables companies –and the winner in particular— to strengthen their credibility toward customers, prospects and suppliers, as well as investors, business partners, employees and peers," explains Vincent Fosty, Partner and TMT Industry Leader. "The Fast50 competition also provides a unique opportunity to build relationships amongst each other, as well as with venture capitalists and larger international companies, which can lead to international opportunities, and to enhance the company's employer brand, helping to attract and retain talent."

We can only agree with what mr. Fosty says. Last year, iText Group was recognized by Deloitte as one of the fastest growing companies in Belgium. With a growth percentage of 2625%, we were ranked on place #3 in Belgium, place #10 in the Benelux, and place #53 in the EMEA-region. In the months that followed the Award Ceremony, we received at least one call or mail a week from VCs, growth equity investors, and so on. Due to lack of time, we were unable to talk to all of them, but we listened to the most important players in the market. After hearing their advice, we decided to take action. The Belgian HQ company used to be a BVBA (similar to an LLC). Today, it’s an NV (similar to a Corp). We installed a board of directors whose first task it was to discuss the 70-page business plan we compiled. We doubled the number of employees (and we're still hiring). Our latest achievement, was to open an office in Singapore to explore the Asian market.

Specific parts of the business plan change as we execute it, but the main goal remains: we bootstrapped a profitable business (no loans, no angels, no VCs) and now we're gearing up to ensure sustainable growth. In a way, you could say that we're funding a Series A round using the profits we made in previous years.

For the 2014 edition of Deloitte's Fast 50, our growth percentage is higher than last year's percentage. We hope that this will result in an even higher ranking and we're looking forward to another exciting year for iText.

The iText history

Today we received the official certificate of our 10th place in Deloitte's Fast 50 Award: If you're interested in the story that led to us getting to that 10th place, you can still register for my talk at the BetaGroup in Kortrijk, Rotary Club in Vilvoorde or at the Business Angel Day in Antwerp.

This is a short overview of the topics I'll cover:

iText's success didn't come overnight: I had my first business idea at the age of 14. I wrote a flat file database system in Basic on my first "portable", a TRS 80/4P. Different organizations brought me their member list and I sold them printed address labels. As a student I was less successful: it took me 7 years (instead of 5) to graduate as a civil engineer. That doesn't mean I didn't learn anything during the 2 years I "lost." Thanks to some of my failures, I was able to learn more than some of those who succeeded at the first try ;-)

Having a mission is important, it helps you focus on what to do and what to avoid. To achieve our mission, we decided to choose for open source right from the start. This wasn't obvious in the year 2000. Large companies were spreading FUD about open source, and from 2004 on, I decided to deal with the three main misconceptions open source was facing:

MISCONCEPTION #1: "OPEN SOURCE ISN'T WELL DOCUMENTED"

I started a free online tutorial which resulted in two books published by Manning. More recently, I started writing a series of free ebooks.

MISCONCEPTION #2: "OPEN SOURCE MEANS: PLENTY OF LEGAL ISSUES"

In 2006-2007, the complete code base of iText was vetted by a battery of lawyers. A complete IP review was done. This resulted in a "clean" product. Since that day, I have the discipline to document every code contribution, making sure no unauthorized code is introduced into the library.

MISCONCEPTION #3: "YOU CAN'T BUILD A SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS ON OPEN SOURCE"

I remember a "full box/empty box" discussion with a VC in 2007 or 2008. I introduced iText to an investor and and he told me all I had was an empty box. That upset me, so I replied in anger: "What are you talking about? The box is full! I bring you proven technology, a best-selling book, hundred of thousands of unique visitors a year on my site,... How dare you say the box is empty?" Today I understand what the VC meant: there was no iText business at that time.

Our good result in Deloitte's Fast 50 proves that we managed to "fill the box". In my talk, I'll explain some of the differences I noticed between doing business in the US versus doing business in Europe, and how we're trying to combine the best of both worlds with our customers and our partners:

Deloitte's Fast50: Press overview

We've just received a mail from Deloitte with a press overview of the Fast 50 event. In the previous blog posts, we've already covered most of these articles, but now we also have French versions of articles we mentioned earlier.

We already showed pictures of the article Tien heel snelle groeiers, now we have the French translation Dix entreprises a la croissance tres rapide, as well as the proclamation of the results: Nederlandse internetbetalingenspecialist Adyen wint Fast50 2013 (Dutch) / Adyen remporte le Fast 50 2013 (French). We already reported the article De 5 Belgische digitale start-ups met de snelste groei in Dutch, now we also have Les 5 startups digitales belges à la croissance la plus rapide. The same goes for DataNews: Tien Belgen in Deloitte Technology Fast50 (Dutch) / Dix entreprises belges dans le Deloitte Technology Fast50 (French). We also have PDFs instead of scans of the articles in De Tijd and De Krant van West-Vlaanderen.
